The burst fade: a barber's complete guide

The burst fade started in West Coast barbering decades ago and quietly took over the rest of the country in the last three years. Here's the working barber's version of what it is and who should book it.

What it is

Instead of fading uniformly down to the neckline, the burst fade curves around the ear — fading down toward the ear and tapering back up toward the nape. The shape forms a soft burst around the ear.

Who it suits

Best on cuts with length on top — modern mullets, mohawks, flow, longer crops. The burst lets the top length sit forward while keeping the sides clean.

Why it's everywhere in LA

It photographs well, grows out cleaner than a full skin fade, and pairs with the longer-on-top styles that have dominated 2025-2026. The combination is hard to beat.

What to ask for

Be specific. 'Burst fade around the ear, low at the nape, length on top kept long.' A good barber will mark the burst point with you before starting.
